Set in 1930s Korea, during the Japanese colonial period, "The Handmaiden" tells the story of a young woman, Sook-hee (Kim Tae-ri), who is hired as a handmaiden to a wealthy heiress, Lady Hideko (Kim Ok-bin). Sook-hee's mission, orchestrated by a con artist, Count Fujiwara (Hiroyuki Tanaka), is to gain Hideko's trust and eventually steal her fortune.
