Despite the limitations of early internet connections, Kawaks’ netplay code was surprisingly robust, helping birth the early online fighting game community.
  • Input Recording: A favorite among combo video creators, Kawaks allowed users to record their inputs. This was crucial for creating "combo videos" and tutorials, as it allowed creators to re-record segments until they achieved the perfect execution.
  • Save States: While common now, Kawaks implemented save states (the ability to save and load anywhere in a game) with incredible speed and reliability, which was vital for practicing difficult sections in games like Metal Slug.
  • Video Filters: Recognizing that blocky pixel art looked jagged on high-resolution CRT monitors of the time, Kawaks offered various blitting options and scanline filters to simulate the look of a real arcade monitor.
  • Low System Requirements: One of Kawaks' greatest strengths was its ability to run full-speed on modest hardware. A user with a low-end PC in 2002 could still enjoy Street Fighter Alpha 3 at a smooth 60 frames per second, something MAME struggled with on similar hardware back then.
