Preserving Brawler Brutality: Urban Reign, Memory Cards, and the PCSX2 Emulator

A common point of confusion for emulator users is the difference between "Save States" and "Memory Card Saves."

  • SLUS-21267 (North America)
  • SLES-53546 (Europe - PAL)
  • SLPM-66023 (Japan)
  • Always back up Mcd001.ps2 and Mcd002.ps2 before editing.
  • Keep one memcard per purpose (one for each game collection) to avoid accidental overwrites.
  • Use .psu exports for portability; they’re widely supported.
  • If transferring from an actual PS2, use a USB memory card adapter + uLaunchELF or a save manager to create .max/.psu, then import to PCSX2 with mymc.
  • For cloud sharing or preservation, keep both the single-save (.psu/.max) and the full memcard image backup.
  • Memory Card Desync: Loading a save state does not reload the memory card file from disk. If you unlocked a character, then later loaded an older save state, the emulator’s memory card cache will mismatch. This can lead to the game writing a corrupted block on the next autosave.
  • Audio/Input Lag Accumulation: Urban Reign’s input buffer is tied to the emulated I/O cycles. Repeated save state loading without resetting the emulation core can cause cumulative audio desyncs, and in rare cases, the game will refuse to recognize the memory card until a full emulator restart.
