Check for a white sticker near the spare tire or on the trunk floor. The code is often a four-digit number near the top of the information sheet.

Warning:

If you enter the wrong code twice, the radio will lock for an hour. Leave the ignition and radio turned on for 60 minutes to reset and try again. Volkswagen Radio Code Guide: How To Access & Unlock It vw radio codes list

Q: My radio says "LOCK" not "SAFE".

A: That means the previous owner used an incorrect third-party code tool and fried the EEPROM. You must replace the radio or have a micro-soldering expert re-flash the chip. Volkswagen (VW) Radio Codes — Comprehensive Handbook Spare

Radio Card:

Check the original Owner’s Manual or the separate "Radio/Navigation System" booklet. The code is often on a small Radio Card at the back of the manual. Older units: press preset buttons 1–4 for digits

Volkswagen-Audi Group (VAG) vehicles—from the mid-1990s to the mid-2010s—utilized a theft-deterrent system. If the battery was disconnected or the radio was removed from the vehicle, the unit would lock itself. The radio would display "SAFE" and require a 4-digit PIN to function again.
